First-ever U-17 national football tourney kicks off

KEETMANSHOOP - NAMPAKeetmanshoop will for the first time ever host an Under-17 national football tournament, which starts today.U-17 football teams from all 13 regions in Namibia have been invited to participate in the inaugural Skorpion Zinc Under-17 Cup. The final game is scheduled for this Sunday.The winner will walk away with N$20 000 in cash and a floating trophy.The tournament is being sponsored by Skorpion Zinc Mine to the tune of N$1,3 million over the next three years.Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, Skorpion Zinc Mine's Co-ordinator for Sustainable Development, Gebhardt Tjiho, said the aim of the tournament, which is being held at the town's sports stadium, is community development and talent identification.The tournament is also a platform to select the best players from different regions and make up a national U-17 football team to represent Namibia in games outside the country, Tjiho explained.He said the Karas U-17 team has been at a training and career guidance camp in Rosh Pinah since last Wednesday, in preparation for the tournament.They were set to return to Keetmanshoop yesterday, before taking to the field today.According to Tjiho, the tournament will be reviewed after three years to see if it can be made a permanent annual event.Last December, Skorpion Zinc Mine and Vedanta Resources also introduced the first-ever Skorpion Charity Cup in Keetmanshoop, which they sponsored to the tune of N$8 000.This annual event is aimed at raising money to feed and clothe street children and the elderly in Keetmanshoop.Nine soccer teams - Fedics United, Brazilia Football Club, Dates Eleven, Riggos, Lovely Superstars, Forever Thistles, Young Eagles, King Pele Santos and Real Fighters - participated last year.Brazilia Football Club emerged as winners in the Skorpion Charity Cup.
