Exciting end to schools' league
The best tennis players in the schools'' league went head to head at the weekend.
The FNB School Tennis League Nationals brought together the ten best schools from the Erongo and Khomas regions at the Namibian Tennis Association (NTA) tennis courts in Olympia on Saturday as part of the FNB NTA junior tennis development programme.
The schools had qualified for the national finals by competing in their respective regional leagues.
The schools competed against each other as teams and individual players in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups for boys and girls.
Each school was represented by teams of four boys and four girls in all age groups.
More than 100 participants played in the ''Play and Stay'' mode, a format suitable for tennis beginners by using softer and bigger tennis balls as well as lower nets.
Matches are also played on smaller courts, which help players adjust to match tactics and technique at an early age. The winners of the individual competition won a new tennis racquet while the runners-up and the school teams were awarded medals from FNB.
Promising players of the FNB primary schools'' league have the chance to become selected for the Junior Tennis Initiative Programme.
At the prize-giving ceremony Revonia Kahivere, FNB manager of corporate social investment, observed the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of all players. She also recognised the good organization and the teamwork of the organisers to make this a successful event.
Samson Kaulinge, president of the NTA, thanked FNB for its long-term engagement in sponsoring tennis development at schools.
“We are looking forward to jointly promoting junior tennis in the next years,” he said.
