Empowering others through art
Plaiven Muanyangapo, popularly known as Youngish Tattooist, has hosted a discussion workshop to inform prospective tattoo artists how to manoeuvre in the media industry
Muanyangapo held his talk at the College of the Arts' New Media Department and it featured in the Design Perspectives series.
He has been in the industry for the past four and a half years and he believes the process of getting a tattoo is beautiful, insightful and unique.
“It is important for tattoo artists to be empowered and there should be room in the media for tattoo artists to explore this,” he says.
He would also like to see more places that offer information, education and inspiration about this creative art form.
“The media can create tattoo business awareness, promote tattoo education, build tattoo artists' portfolios, promote tattoo products and promote tattoo artworks,” he says.
He says he has experienced a lot of challenges because there is much greediness in the tattooing industry.
“Tattoo artists are not willing to share knowledge and basic information about tattooing among themselves or with the upcoming tattoo artists. You can be good friends today, the next day they will badmouth you and claim your artwork as theirs,” he says.
He feels that his talk at the college went well.
“Their reaction was overwhelming and I did not expect the number of students that pitched.”
Muanyangapo also tells The Zone that after the presentation, a number of attendees approached him and were willing to learn a few things about tattooing.
“Their review of my presentation was that my content was very precise and replied to their questions,” he adds.
Muanyangapo plans to host another talk in future, as he plans to interact more closely with different media houses in order to analyse tattooing from a media point of view.
“I am looking forward to doing more design perspectives, or tattoo facilitating. Only by communicating with the media regularly, will it be able to attempt to produce an industry discourse that is respectful and truthful, and above all celebrates and displays the unbelievable tattoo artwork that is being created daily in this country.”
