ECN breaks silence on vehicle payments

Owners of vehicles that were used by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) in last year's elections are disgruntled as they still have not received payments promised to them.

Due to a shortage of vehicles, the ECN hired vehicles from private individuals for use during the elections last year. The owners had to be paid an agreed fee ranging from N$1 000 to N$1 300 per day that their vehicle was used. A settlement period of 30 days after the elections was agreed upon but many have yet to receive payment. The ECN has confirmed that only individuals from seven regions have been compensated. These are Khomas, Oshikoto, Kavango West, //Karas, Kunene, Zambezi and three constituencies in the Erongo Region.



Apology

According to a source, the ECN went silent and did not give clear answers when asked about payment. One vehicle owner said she was hoping to use the money to cover some of her January expenses, including those arising from children returning to school. In a statement issued on Sunday, the ECN stated that it was in of engaging the ministry of finance “to be able to make payments for the private vehicle owners of the remaining regions”.
