Drugs worth more than N$52 000 were seized over the weekend, as the police continue their clampdown on possession and dealing.

Drug use has increased in the country during the coronavirus lockdown period, apparently as a result of the lack of alcohol.

On Friday, two men were arrested at Rehoboth for being in possession of 19 mandrax tablets valued at N$2 280. Also at Rehoboth, a 29-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for being found in possession of 40 grams of cannabis valued at N$2 000, while in another incident that day at the same town, a 31-year-old man was arrested for the possession of one-and-a-half mandrax tablets valued at N$180. Two men were also arrested on Friday at Rehoboth for being in possession of eight units of crack cocaine valued at N$800. The duo apparently tried to flush the crack down the toilet before being apprehended. On Friday in Katutura, a 26-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of 50 grams of cannabis valued at N$1 000.

At Tses, a 53-year-old woman was arrested on Friday after police searched her house and found cannabis in butter containers. The weight and value is yet to be determined. At Otjomuise on Saturday, a 29-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of 360 grams of cannabis valued at N$4 750. In another incident at Mariental, a 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for being in possession of five grams of cannabis valued at N$250. At Keetmanshoop, a 32-year-old man was arrested for being in the possession of nine grams of cannabis with an estimated value of N$270.



Traffic checkpoint

In Ohangwena at the Onhuno road traffic checkpoint, a 48-year-old Rwandan refugee from the Osire refugee camp was arrested on Friday for being in possession of 3 985 grams of cannabis valued at N$39 850, while a 36-year-old man was arrested at the same place on Saturday for being in possession of 374 grams of cannabis valued N$3 470.



Rape, assault

In another incident in //Karas, a 21-year-old man was arrested this weekend for raping and impregnating a 14-year-old girl last November. Nine suspects between the ages of 25 and 65 were also arrested at a village in Otjinene for assaulting and seriously injuring three other men with knobkieries. The injured men are aged 18, 35 and 36.
