Donkeys clash over stage name
Ma/gaisa queen Female Donkey and her former mentor and bestie !Oubasen, who is also known as Donkey, are said to be in a bitter battle over the use of the stage name.
Donkey has apparently banned her from using the word Donkey while she performs or records music.
Things have gone so far that Magdalena !Gontes, popularly known as Female Donkey, has released a Ma/gaisa hit song titled ‘Ander Donkey’.
The two were loved on the Ma/gaisa scene and set stages alight with their electrifying performances.
Female Donkey, however, claimed this week that as her popularity grew, the cracks started showing and !Oubasen started feeling more and more intimidated by her success.
She said she performed at a live show in Okahandja last year and the crowd were on their feet, while they seemed less entertained when bigger artists like Exit and Tate Buti were on stage.
Female Donkey said after that incident she noticed that !Oubasen wasn’t too pleased with her.
She explained that they started working together in 2011 and he helped her release her first album titled ‘Showstopper’.
She is now working on her second album, due for release in May, and had recently released her party anthem Bling Thing.
In the past there were also rumours that the two were having an affair.
Female Donkey this week claimed for the first time that they had been romantically involved during her interview with tjil. She added that she respects !Oubasen as a musician.
“There is no resentment from my side. He helped me a lot and mentored me.
“If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have been here, but I won’t give up the name Donkey because he says so,†she said calmly.
Female Donkey explained to tjil that contrary to popular belief, she was called Female Donkey long before she met !Oubasen and said it was just a coincidence that they are both called Donkey.
She claimed she was called Donkey during her primary school days.
Female Donkey said she is also disappointed about the rumours, allegedly spread by !Oubasen, that she dropped him after he made her famous.
“I never dropped him, he dropped me,†she said.
Female Donkey has also been criticised for insisting on calling herself that. The singer said that many people don’t realise that in her culture a donkey is a holy animal - one who goes the extra mile.
“Donkeys are holy animals and they are also strong animals.
They can endure a lot.
They get beaten, but they keep getting up. That’s who I am, I never stay down and I am proud of my name Female Donkey,†she
added.
