Determined United sink Suburbs to extend lead
Trustco United are the team to watch this season.
A 14-man Trustco United rugby team put up an impressive performance on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Western Suburbs 23-22 in their Namibia Rugby Premier League clash at the Suburbs grounds in the capital.
Going into the match, United led the log standing with 33 points, while their opponents were fourth on 20 points.
United, who have been impressive since the start of the season, lived up to expectations as they opened the scoring through a penalty by Winmar Rust in the 10th minute but Donavan van Wyk ran in their first try of the match in the 17th minute, with Rust failing to convert from the spot.
Suburbs then responded with a penalty in the 34th minute by Ricardo Swartz and took the game to a half-time score of 11-3 in favour of United.
In the second half, the home team came out blazing, scoring their first try of the match just six minutes into that half through Niken Cloete, with Swartz converting from the spot.
The home team's dominant display continued as it took them just three minutes to take the lead with a Mogamat Emamdien try in the 49th minute, with Swartz making no mistake from the spot once more.
Suburbs taking the lead forced United to up their game and they scored their second try of the match through Naude Neethling but Rust failed to convert from the spot.
Suburbs once more extended their lead in the second half after Cloete ran in his second try of the match but Swartz missed the conversion.
United were then dealt with a blow when Gerhard Thirion was red carded in the 66th minute of the match but the Olympia-based outfit continued with their hard work despite being a man down. During injury time, Suburbs were made to pay for the missed conversion when United's substitute Jonathan Goliath scored a try which Rust converted for his side's one-point win to extend their lead atop the table to 10 points.
United are currently on 37 points, while Wanderers, who had a weekend off, last week thrashed Kudus 60-31 in Walvis Bay to move second on the log on 27 points after collecting two bonus points from the 10 tries they scored on the day.
