Councillor finishes beer after crash
While the rest of the country endures an alcohol sales ban, with errant citizens having their beers emptied out in public, Swapo National Council member Ndakunda brazenly finished his drink being involved in a crash, while calling those filming him “cowards”.

Engela constituency councillor Jason Ndakunda, who represents Swapo in the National Council, is in hot water after being caught on camera in an alleged drunk driving incident.
In video footage circulated on social media, Ndakunda can be seen finishing a beer after a crash that happened at Oshikango on Monday afternoon, while calling those filming him “cowards”. The sale of alcoholic beverages is banned in Namibia under the Covid-19 state of emergency. Ndakunda took to social media yesterday to apologise, but the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) leadership condemned his behaviour.
“I hereby wish to unconditionally apologise for what happened yesterday (on Monday), as being circulated in a video on social media. I fully regret the incident and all the inconvenience it may have caused,” Ndakunda posted on his Facebook profile.
Ndakunda could not be reached for comment as his cellphone went unanswered.
Swapo position
Swapo's Ohangwena regional coordinator Hafeni Hatutale said he had been informed of the incident involving Ndakunda but could not comment before getting the councillor's side of the story.
“I heard about the incident this morning and I made numerous efforts to call Ndakunda to hear his position but he was not answering. I will wait until I hear from him, then we can provide our stand on it,” Hatutale said.
Swapo secretary-general Sophia Shaningwa could not be reached for comment either, as she was in a meeting when contacted.
The party's youth wing was not pleased with Ndakunda's behaviour.
The SPYL secretary for information, publicity and mobilisation Gerson Dumeni said Ndakunda had brought the name of the party into disrepute.
“With utmost sincerity we expected Ndakunda to be exemplary and honourable in his conduct, especially in the public space. Moreover, to lead by example … in particular with respect and adherence to the state of emergency regulations that were declared by the President Hage Geingob and subsequently passed by parliament,” Dumeni said in a press statement.
“Therefore, in view of the disgusting public conduct of Ndakunda, with which he brought the good name of the party into disrepute, we call upon him to unreservedly apologise to the people of Namibia, in particular the people of Ohangwena Region and Engela Constituency,” the statement reads.
