Citizens slaughtered
Tura Magic FC set a 2017/18 Namibia Premier League (NPL) goal-scoring record on Tuesday evening, when they beat a scrappy Citizens FC 6-0.
Magic, who are currently second on the log, opened the scoring with a goal from no-nonsense defender Charles Hambira, who drove his shot past Citizens goalkeeper Jonas Matheus as early as the seventh minute. Hambira, who recently returned from the 2018 African Nations Championship (Chan) finals in Morocco, is in incredible form and showed why he thoroughly deserves his national colours.
Tjipeta Katjimune followed his lead and scored with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, after the Citizens' defence unnecessarily conceded possession.
Two minutes later Itamunua Keimuine won and converted a penalty, following a powerful run into the box, to make it 3-0 to Magic, with Citizens reeling.
Keimuine had another chance to score, but missed.
His teammate, Junius Theophilus won and converted another penalty for Magic to put his side 4-0 up after 37 minutes.
With half-time approaching, Theophilus struck a powerful shot to up the score to 5-0. In the second half, Citizens tried to come back into the game by scoring a consolation goal but the Magic players had another trick up their sleeve.
Keimuine scored the final goal by outpacing the Citizens defence, who seemingly were no longer interested in the match. Magic had many changes to increase their tally, but made silly errors.
However, it was their biggest victory in the NPL and a record for season so far, as no team has scored as many goals in a match.
Tura Magic coach James Britz said they used a different approach to when they faced Unam last weekend. “We studied the weakness and strengths of Unam prior to the match and we also did that going into facing Citizens. We changed the positions of some players and put speedy players on the wings and that combination worked for us. “Our approach was different, with the aim to win. Going into the league we did not have the best preparation, as we did not have some of the guys we have now, but we are working with the players we have,” Britz said.
He said his team had delivered a brilliant first-half performance.
“The players stuck to the tactics but I was not happy with the second-half. They made unnecessary mistakes,” he said.
Britz added that the win gives his players confidence, moving forward. “The players believe in the type of training we give them and everyone is giving their best and I believe we will do well in our next match against Black Africa on Saturday,” he said.
Before going to print, Civics was set to face Orlando Pirates at the Sam Nujoma Stadium yesterday.
Young Africa will cross paths with Tigers on Friday at 20:00, at the same venue.
