Lloyd Winini believes that the writer has a duty to tell stories that challenge society to be better. “We live in an unjust world where many voices cannot be heard and as a writer, I want to be able to tell the stories that many people take for granted or that feel important or issues that people are afraid to talk about head on.”

Winini wears many hats, as he is a skilled writer, director as well as actor. “I write scripts and direct for television, film, theatre and radio.” He also specialises in voice-over acting.

Having received training from the University of Namibia in electronic media and drama, Winini has been exposed to the arts from a young age. Unlike many, Winini didn’t have to “discover” his love for the arts; although he was shy growing up, he was always surrounded by art, and it has stuck with him until now.

During his high school days, he believed that he wanted to become a lawyer, considering how good he was at history and tying that to his performance in literature. He believed that this was his calling, until he started applying for university admission and discovered that he could study film or theatre instead. “I knew what I wanted and I never looked back.”

As a writer, Winini aspires to inspire the next generation to excel and surpass those before them. “I just hope that one day my work will inspire the next generation to do better than we did and hopefully change the world for the better.”

Around the age of 10, Winini recounts watching a play with his mother, which unlocked an endless world of imagination. One proud moment for him was taking a bow after the performance of ‘Welcome to the Republic’ and ‘The Nut House’ at Unam and at the NTN.

“It's really satisfying when your audience appreciates your work,” he says.
