Ruusa Namuhuya: Fashion Designer FASHION WITH A CAUSE For most people, fashion is associated with glitz and glamour. For some, it is weird, colourful and inappropriate rags that are worn by the brothers that are suspected to be inhabiting the neighbouring planets, aka UFOs... then for the final few, it simply represents a trendy piece or item of clothing that complements the Jimmy Choos that you picked up on your last trip to one of the foreign cities with bright lights. However, what all these people ignore is that every single piece or item of clothing was considered fashion at some point. Yes, this includes that maroon skirt with an asymmetrical hemline you gave to your cousin from the village because it had seen better days, that old grey jacket that has been gathering dust and has holes inflicted by the neighbourhood rat was also at some point chosen to be a fashion item by somebody sitting on a high gold chair somewhere far away in a foreign city with very bright lights - that is how it ended up in your possession. All the clothes we wear are decided for us months before we even think of acquiring them. My point is that, every single person is clothed every single day. (Ideally, anyway.) It doesn't matter what it is you are wearing or how old, new or trendy it is; it is still some kind of fashion. You see, fashion should not be restricted to the stage, movies and magazines. Fashion should be the expression of one's individuality through the way they dress. The saying that goes "if you look good, you feel good" is not actually just a saying. The way you dress, or in this case the fashion you associate yourself with, is the way you have chosen to represent yourself to the rest of the world, so it goes without saying that no one should dictate to you how you ought to dress. We are different people who are all wonderful and fearfully made by God the Almighty, therefore the pieces/items you choose to cover your body with daily should not be in any way a misrepresentation of you by yourself! Fashion can be used to boost that low self-esteem and lift depleted confidence levels. You would still need to do some internal work but it's not necessary for people to know what you are going through from the way you are dressing. If you adopt the notion that fashion is not just the latest trendy items in the shops or the latest designer collections, and that it's simply your choice of garment that you adorn your body with daily, then we can get image issues out of the way and tackle more serious social ills in our sociey.
