Careers Expo promises more

Sanlam Investments will be the main sponsor for this year’s Careers Expo that is set to kick off today at the Country Club in Windhoek.
The Careers Expo expects over 3 500 learners this year with a total of 45 speakers having been selected to speak at the Careers Expo. Sanlam will avail financial experts in the insurance industry to give students an insight on the importance of financial planning once they start earning an income.
Not only will financial advisors avail their skills to the students but Sanlam employees from various departments such as marketing, investments and client services will also speak to the students, amongst others.
Some of the speakers on the line-up include Johan Strauss, a farmer, Helena Nathnel an engineer, Nangula Nafuka a young lawyer, Gino Absai an accountant and Nangula Shilongo who is an architect.
These speakers will ensure that not only the theoretical information is shared with the students but that the practicalities of the working life are also included. The speakers get to give real-life examples which allow students to understand the more positive sides of specific careers, as well as encouraging students to face these realities.
Annually, the regional directorate informs schools about the Careers Expo. The aims and objectives of the Careers Expo are clearly outlined to ensure that teachers and pupils understand the importance of knowing what careers to choose before matriculating. According to Sanlam Investments many a time, students still do not have an idea of what they want to become once in their final year at in high school.
Sanlam’s communications department told The Zone that students are often influenced by their peers or family members to select a certain career, but through this expo students are also exposed to so many more career choices. This message is very important and is one of the factors that ensure and encourage students and schools become involved.
Close to 120 students came from the Erongo and //Kharas region for last year’s expo. During the attendance of these schools, TransNamib sponsored these students. They travelled by train and were housed at the Gammams Training Centre.
Apart from the exhibitor stands, Sanlam’s Speakers Hall ensures that experts have a one-on-one session with the pupils to answer any relevant questions to their field of expertise. Annually, the Careers Expo also tries to engage well-known Namibians that have been exemplary in their respective field, which usually excites students to actually see their local icons in person.
The Careers Expo balances it between the number of schools that attend each year as well as the students’ experience. Sanlam engages with students during the event and hear instant feedback about their experience. This is done through our exhibitors’ feedback and one on ones with the presenters during their 45-minute presentation in the Sanlam Speakers Hall.
In the past the Careers Expo has hosted students from Otjiwarongo, Okahandja, Rehoboth and Karibib. Schools from the Erongo and //Kharas regions have also been attendance. To mention a few schools, they included Karibib Private School, Dr Lemmer High School in Rehoboth and Okahandja Secondary School. Schools avail their school buses to transport students to the careers expo
Sanlam Namibia, as a major role player in the Namibian finance industry, and thereby a driving force behind the country’s economy, appreciates that it also has the ability to make an impact on the lives of its direct and indirect stakeholders. Recognising that the developmental needs of the country are vast, Sanlam Namibia is honoured to be able to contribute to the realisation of Vision 2030 in whichever way it can.
Striving to be a truly Namibian company aiming to contribute meaningfully towards the national effort to bring about a better life for all Namibians, Sanlam Namibia’s approach to Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is based on honesty, openness and trust.
Through the Sanlam Careers Expo, the company is able to carry out their aims through educational development. This platform allows Sanlam to start at grass root level and provides all of the tools to ensure that our future leaders are well informed and equipped with vital career choice information. They believe that the Sanlam Careers Expo will nurture the countries future doctors, economists, auditors, singers, presenters, engineers and many more, to help uplift the development of our country.
This year marks the seventh year that Sanlam Investments is sponsoring the Careers Expo and is just another step and is just another quest to help society through Sanlam’s corporate involvement.
