The national budget will be tabled in parliament tomorrow by finance minister Iipumbu Shiimi, with strict conditions in place to comply with the coronavirus regulations.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene today after its sittings were suspended nearly two months ago, due to the coronavirus outbreak and emergency lockdown measures. The first session of the seventh parliament started on 24 March, but was suspended the same day due to the coronavirus emergency. New members were sworn in days earlier.

According to a statement issued by parliamentary spokesperson David Nahogandja, the August House is expected to debate the Appropriation Bill (budget), which will be tabled by Shiimi tomorrow.

The budget was expected to be tabled on 21 April, but was postponed due to a request by Shiimi.

According to Nahogandja, in keeping with the requirements set for the coronavirus, the National Assembly has put in place measures aimed at reducing the spread of the disease.

These measures include hand sanitising, temperature screening as well as wearing masks, as directed by the current state of emergency regulations. “This is a must for people entering the parliament building during this period.”

To comply with the requirements of social and personal distancing, only 50 MPs will be allowed in the National Assembly chamber during the session. Other MPs will make use of teleconferencing facilities.

The debate on the second reading of the Appropriation Bill is scheduled for 2 and 3 June, with the State of the Nation Address by President Hage Geingob taking place on 4 June.
