Brutal rapist Namiseb still free

The violent rapist Charles Namiseb is believed to still be walking the streets and posing a danger to the public, after he escaped from custody earlier in March.
On the day he was convicted of brutally attacking an elderly couple and violently raping the woman, Namiseb, 34, simply walked out of the Windhoek police station holding cells.
Rumours have been circulating that Namiseb has been arrested, but police spokesperson Slogan Matheus said yesterday that the police were still hunting for the convicted rapist.
Namiseb and Edwin Tourob, 34, were on trial in the High Court in connection with a violent attack and robbery of an elderly couple at Uis in the Erongo Region.
“The assault was a merciless attack on pensioners who were not able to fight off the attacks and properly defend themselves due to old age,” Judge Siboleka said in his judgement.
In the attack, a 72-year-old man was struck on the head with a spade before he was dragged into his house and tied up. His 69-year-old wife was assaulted, raped and tied up in the house. She sustained serious injuries.
The two assailants then robbed the elderly couple of their car, money, two firearms and jewellery worth about N$78 900.
Namiseb was convicted on February 29 and was due to return to court for sentencing. However, shortly after returning from court on February 29, he allegedly told police officers that he had been granted bail and simply left.
Namiseb hails from Uis, but he also has relatives in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Otjiwarongo.
In the past, Nampol spokesman Edwin Kanguatjivi warned the public not to try to arrest the fugitive but to report his presence to the nearest police station.
Any person with information about Namiseb’s whereabouts is requested to contact Chief Inspector John Mwatongwe at 064-219 044 or 081 246 1121, or the nearest police station.
