Botes, Vries help PSL teams to victory
Namibian goalkeeper Virgil Vries kept a clean sheet for his South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Maritzburg United on Tuesday.
The goalkeeper, who has been displaced as the club’s first choice, was restored to a starting position when the team faced Free State Stars.
He repaid that faith by helping his team to a 1-0 victory that has boosted Maritzburg United’s chances of surviving relegation from the PSL.
Sheldon van Wyk scored the only goal of the match.
While the team is still last in the PSL, the result will lift the players’ confidence going into the last four matches of the campaign.
Meanwhile, veteran striker Henrico Botes showed that he still has the legs to play top class football as he featured for an impressive 80 minutes during Bidvest Wits’s 2-0 win over SuperSport United.
The 36-year-old Namibian covered a considerable amount of ground as he was picked as Wits’s solitary front man.
His hard running style consistently caused problems for the SuperSport United defence.
That movement allowed him to get a clear run at goal in the second half but with only the keeper to beat, Botes chose to pass to a teammate, which allowed SuperSport’s keeper, Ronwen Williams, to recover and make a save.
Regardless of the miss, Botes still had an impressive game as he also consistently helped Wits while they were under attack.
Wits’s goals were scored by Burundian international Papy Faty either side of halftime.
Botes’s compatriot Wangu Gome was on the bench for Wits and did not make an appearance.
There was also no sign of Da Costa Angula and Hendrick Somaeb, who play for Free State Stars, during their match against Maritzburg United.
