Baby Warriors take bronze
The Baby Warriors walked away with third place at the U-17 Cosafa champs yesterday, while Angola beat South Africa to claim the title.
Namibia defeated hosts Mauritius 2-1 in the third place playoff match at the Under-17 Cosafa Cup, taking bronze at the Stade St Francois Xavier in Port Louis.
Namibia's Steven Damaseb scooped the player of the match award.
In Friday's semifinal clash, Namibia were trounced 7-0 by Angola.
Namibia came in to the clash on the right foot, after dispatching the Seychelles 8-3 in their first group match.
In their second match, they lost against Mauritius 1-0 and then romped to a 2-0 victory over Botswana.
The team's confidence levels were high, but they were brought back down to earth with a massive thud by Angola.
The 'Palanquinhas' dominated the game in the first half, but their finishing let them down.
It was only after a tug of the ears by the technical team during halftime that the Angolan team put in an excellent display to rout Namibia.
Osvaldo Capemba scored a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot.
Gaspar Morais also got his name on the scoresheet, while Zito Luvumbo added a fifth, which was his third goal of the competition.
They were not finished though, as Morais added his second and Abdoul Barri provided the cherry on top with a seventh goal.
The Namibians did create many chances, but did not score.
South Africa clashed with Angola in the final yesterday, which the Angolan boys 1-0.
The winner of the competition will represent the southern region in the African Nations Cup (Afcon) that will be held from May 12 to 26 next year, and will include eight teams.
The importance of this championship was reinforced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which made the decision to change the previous qualifying system.
The Afcon tourney will determine the four African countries that will compete at the U-17 World Cup that will take place in Peru from 17 September to 8 October next year.
