APP announces its parliamentary list

All People's Party (APP) secretary-general Vincent Kanyetu launched the party's manifesto for the November presidential and National Assembly elections on Tuesday.

Kanyetu announced the APP's list of 72 candidates for the National Assembly election and outlined its manifesto, which promises a government committed to education and lifelong learning, at a media briefing in Windhoek.

He said the uniqueness of the manifesto is the importance it places on agriculture as a way to deal with unemployment in the country.

“By focusing on agriculture, the party promises that it will ensure young people who reside in rural areas have access to smallholdings to produce food for home consumption and also for the market,” he said.

Kanyetu added that by spearheading national development projects countrywide, APP would ensure that young people are kept busy through gainful employment instead of indulging in destructive habits like alcohol and drug abuse.

“These habits are on the rise in the country and pose a serious concern to Namibian society,” he said.

Kanyetu also informed the media of the top 20 candidates for the APP parliamentary list, which he described as gender balanced and representative of most regions in Namibia.

He said although the party does not subscribe to the doctrine of 50/50 gender representation, the APP has a list which is 51 percent men and 49 percent women.

One of the female candidates in the top 20, Petronella Steenkamp, told Nampa that APP is a progressive party in terms of gender representation.

She said the party's president, Ignatius Shixwameni, is a gender-sensitive man who has always put women's issues at the forefront of APP policy.
