The Swapo regional executive for Oshikoto Region has rejected the nomination of former Omuthiya town councillor Moses Amukoto as district coordinator at tomorrow's Omuthiya district executive election.

In a letter issued by Oshikoto regional coordinator Armas Amukwiyu, Amukoto's nomination is rejected due to his support of former independent presidential candidate Panduleni Itula.

The previous district conference took place in August last year but was nullified by the party's central committee.

Rejected nomination

Following the nullification of the district conference, Amukwiyu wrote to the Omuthiya district coordinator Katrina Uusiku on 22 June requesting her to facilitate nominations for the top three positions in the district.

According to Amukwiyu's letter written on Wednesday, the branches nominated Uusiku, Ilia Nghipundjwa and Amukoto for the coordinator position; Sussan Uukongo and Samuel Shikongo as mobiliser and Josef Kakungha and Josef Nangolo as treasurer.

“Members resolved to clear Uusiku and Nghipundjwa, while withholding Amukoto's candidature due to his participation in the 2019 presidential campaign in support of Itula who stood as an independent candidate against President Hage Geingob,” stated Amukwiyu.

“Against that background members of the committee resolved that is too soon for Amukoto to contest for the position of district coordinator and that he should publicly distance himself from Itula's agenda before he is considered for any elective position of the party.”

Last year Amukoto interrupted President Hage Geingob's town hall meeting at Omuthiya to accuse Nashongo and Uusiku of allegedly facilitating rampant corruption at the town. Despite Geingob urging Amukoto to avoid spreading “unfounded rumours while on record”, the former councillor was defiant and continued to allege that the two office-bearers are corrupt.

Support for Itula

Amukoto said he supported Itula because the party failed to take action against corrupt politicians in the Oshikoto Region.

“The party regional executive failed to recall Uusiku as the mayor for Omuthiya and other councillors who are suspected of corruption and are being investigated by Anti-Corruption Commission. The Swapo Party regional executive failed in their duty when they let Uusiku run the district office although her term had ended in June 2019,” Amukoto said.

“We petitioned them but no answers yet to date, therefore as a principled man I refused to work with suspected corrupt politicians in Oshikoto. That is why I offered my full support to Itula, who seems to want to root out corruption.”
