Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International has questioned the Botswana Defence Force’s conduct after it shot four men on the Chobe River earlier this month.

The four men were shot after they were allegedly found fishing in the southern channel of the river. Speaking out against the incident, Amnesty International director for east and southern Africa, Deprose Muchena, questioned the behaviour of Botswana’s army.

“No one deserves to be killed for being found fishing, where they are clearly looking for livelihood. Namibian and Botswana authorities must start holding those who kill people in the said river accountable,” he said.

He called for a joint-investigation into the matter, which both governments launched and are working on together.

“Authorities must launch an independent and impartial investigation into the killings and ensure that suspected perpetrators are brought to justice,” Muchena said.

Search for ‘apparent weapons’

Namibian police inspector-general Sebastian Ndeitunga had last week said investigations were being carried jointly.

“So, we have today dispatched a team of divers to Botswana to go and help search for the apparent weapons. What I have told my team is to first focus their investigation on the apparent weapons,” he said.

Namibia and Botswana have agreed to a joint investigation to shed light on the fatal shooting of three Namibian fishermen and their cousin from Zambia.

The three brothers, Tommy (48), Martin (40) and Wamunyima Nchindo (36), and their cousin Sinvula Muyeme (44), were shot by the BDF on 5 November.

The brothers’ mother, Alphonsina Nkungano Mubu (69), also died five days later, apparently from shock.

They were buried at Impalila Island last week, while Muyeme was buried in Zambia.
