Africa must maintain unity of purpose and urgently move towards the upliftment of its citizens, both materially and ideologically.

This is according to President Hage Geingob, who made a number of remarks during his commemorative message as part of the 57th Africa Day celebrations yesterday, including that Africans have much to celebrate, as the continent continues to make progress.

Africa Day marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) by its founding fathers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the aim of encouraging political and economic integration among member states, and eradicating colonialism and neo-colonialism from the continent.

Free and fair

In recent years, regular free and fair elections have been witnessed, Geingob said, as well as the smooth transition of power between presidents and increased transparency.

The strengthening of democratic governance architectures by refining processes, systems and institutions have also been witnessed, as well as increased respect for court decisions after election disputes.

“In 57 years, we have achieved what most thought would be impossible - a free, democratic Africa, a self-governing Africa, and most importantly, an Africa without incessant civil wars and unrest, focused on the well-being of citizens,” Geingob said

A new reality

According to Geingob, Africa stands on the precipice of a new reality.

“From the darkness of colonialism, we have emerged into the light that promises future prosperity.”

He said although Africa is currently faced with the unprecedented challenge of the coronavirus, it can be assured and confident in the African Union (AU).

“We have a time-tested and proven organisation through which we can galvanise continental and international support and solidarity in the spirit of pan-Africanism to overcome this new and invisible enemy.”

Continental interventions

The AU has developed continental interventions to fight the coronavirus, which include the implementation of the Common African Continental Strategy, the framework to fight the disease and to strengthen health systems and the mobilisation of resources.

Geingob further stressed that Africa should harness its rich cultural diversity towards reaching common objectives of economic emancipation and social development.

Through collective vision and unity of purpose, the continent will usher in the new Africa, he said.

“An Africa where more than 1.2 billion sons and daughters of the soil can live in peace, unity and harmony.

An Africa where we can move freely as brothers and sisters. An Africa where we can all pursue the dream of prosperity.

This our Africa, the Africa we want.”
