Advisory body to prioritise cooperatives' registration

Only six of the county's 140 cooperativs are fully registered

The chairperson of the newly appointed Cooperatives' Advisory Board (CAB), Stanley Nyembo, says the new board will prioritise the full registration of all cooperatives in Namibia during its term.

Nyembo says out of the around 140 cooperatives, only six are fully registered.

“Having cooperatives that are not fully registered hinders the success of cooperative movements in Namibia.

“Thus, the new board shall work hard on the registration of all cooperatives,” Nyembo said.

He said there is a dire need for the wide promotion and exposure of cooperatives, as well as an education programme on their importance and function.

“Educating our communities on what cooperatives are and what they stand for, is key to the reform of cooperatives and thereby their continuous growth in Namibia,” Nyembo said.

Learning from other countries about cooperatives, through the establishment of exchange programmes.

And regular visits if possible, will immensely shape the understanding of cooperatives, he added.

Reform

The administrative and organisational reform of cooperatives will include the establishment of an independent body that represents all cooperatives, in the near future.

“Such an institution will contribute to the monitoring and evaluation, as well as effective and independent management of cooperatives, but it will depend on the cooperatives themselves to pitch in and work hard to achieve this dream,” Nyembo said.

While there are a lot of international donors that are willing to support cooperatives, it is the responsibility of cooperatives to have the administrative will to reform their movements by acting as a collective rather than individuals, he said. The board, which consist of 13 members, was appointed on 08 February and will serve a three-year term. - Nampa
