The Namibia Diamond Trading Company, Namdeb, Debmarine and other players in the mining sector set the bar high with the introduction of the first coordinated diamond hub at this year's mining expo.

Officially launching the Chamber of Mines of Namibia's mining expo, mines and energy minister Obeth Kandjoze said: “Although the concept of a diamond hub is not new to the diamond sector across the globe, it is, indeed, a new concept for Namibia.”

According to him, the hub would create better opportunities for local diamond players.

“The long-term benefits of a diamond hub are that it will contribute towards drawing attention to new investments from diamond technology companies, global cutting and polishing companies, and drawing investment from diamond buyers and services to support them.”

Applauding the brains behind the hub, Kandjoze said: “What you have collectively achieved with the diamond hub is, indeed, in line with the government's vision for the establishment of a downstream diamond industry in a professional, socially responsible, commercially viable and sustainable manner that satisfies the aspirations of the government, the international diamond industry and other important key stakeholders.”

He also commended efforts towards local value addition. “The government appreciates the fact that downstream beneficiation in Namibia can only be successful on the back of a successful tripartite partnership between the government, NDTC and the cutting and polishing industry.”

The head of new established mining contractor BMI Namibia, Emile Smit, described the expo as the perfect platform to market his company. “It is a good opportunity for us to market ourselves. In terms of the marketing, it is a very good event. We are very excited about the local mining sector.”

Namibia Rare Earths president Don Burton echoed Smit's sentiments, saying: “It is a very well-organised expo. There have been big improvements in its organisation. It will also give us an opportunity to meet with the various local service providers for our envisaged mining project.”

The mining expo ends tomorrow.
