Scores hurt in violent police standoff
As many as 26 people were injured at Okakarara after an hours-long standoff with the police early this morning. According to sources, three police officers were allegedly assaulted as members of the community blocked the entrance to the local police station following an alteration. Okakarara was a hive of activity at the weekend, with hundreds visiting the town for the annual commemoration of the battle of Ohamakari. NBC news reported that Ovaherero paramount chief Vekuii Rukoro met with senior officers inside the station before he addressed the crowd. A sizeable crowd were still outside the station around lunch time wanting to lay charges against officers and demanding the release of those arrested after the physical altercation with officers at the station, the NBC reported.
