Second Queensab bonanza coming

Groot Aub tourney to attract footballers from across the country

15 October 2019 | Sports

The second edition of the annual Queensab Soccer Bonanza will take place from 2 to 3 November at the Groot Aub settlement near Windhoek.

No premier league players or teams are allowed to compete.

The tournament is aimed at giving a chance to lower division and non-league football sides to compete against each other in the absence of organised football in the country.

Approximately 30 teams are expected to participate. Last year //Karas second division outfit Dates Eleven Football Club won the inaugural edition, after defeating Windhoek-based Dolam Pirates 6-5 on penalties after a one-all draw during regular time. As part of the build-up to the tournament there will be a Road to Queensab pool and play mini-tournament during the weekend of 18 October in Groot Aub, with teams paying a N$650 registration fee, of which N$50 will be used for match officials.

The two finalists will share the pool money. The pool and play is aimed at giving teams a chance to sharpen their competitive edge and boost their confidence at the same time, while gaining the opportunity to win some money to register for the main event.

The total prize money for the main tournament is N$40 000, with the winners receiving N$20 000, 20 gold medals and a new soccer kit, as well as a floating trophy.

The runners-up will receive N$10 000 and 20 silver medals, along with a new soccer kit.

The semi-final losers will each receive N$5 000. The 'last home team standing' will get N$1 500, provided they go through to the next round.

Registration is N$2 000 and is payable on or before 31 October, with the draw to be conducted on the 1 November at Groot Aub Junior Secondary School at 19:30.

No team will be part of the draw without paying the full registration fee. A tournament CD with 11 tracks, created by Aimab Music Production artist Big Boss and featuring Mudy, will be on sale for N$70.

Vendors who want to sell their foodstuffs will pay N$150 for the weekend. Entrance to the soccer matches is N$10 per person and N$10 per vehicle. Businesses in and around Groot Aub are urged to come onboard and sponsor events of this magnitude, as part of their social responsibility initiatives.
