School principal hacked to death

The principal of Okambebe Combined School in the Ohangwena Region, Lazarus Kapiye (59), was killed in his home on Saturday.

No confirmation could be obtained from the Ohangwena police, but the NBC and Nampa reported that Kapiye was hacked to death with a panga while he was watching television with his family at Oshikwiyu village.

It is alleged that Kapiye's nephew, who is also their neighbour, walked into the house with a panga and attacked Kapiye without saying a word.

Kapiye, who had just returned from Windhoek where he had attended his daughter's graduation ceremony, died almost instantly.

The assailant later handed himself over at the Omungwelume police station, the state-owned media reported.

The regional director of education, Isak Hamatwi, told Namibian Sun that Kapiye's contribution towards the region's academic performance had been vital.

Kapyike had been a department head at Haimbili Haufiku Senior Secondary School until his appointment as Okambebe's principal in 2009.

β€œI heard about the incident on Saturday evening that Kapiye, who was due to retire next year April, had been murdered. It is sad but we do not have the full story yet as to what transpired leading to such a tragic incident,” said Hamatwi.

β€œIt is quite a loss to us as a region and it is also sad that someone who was about to take his public service to the conclusion suddenly had his life is taken in a brutal manner like that, and by someone who is close to him.”

Hamatwi added that Kapiye's dedication had contributed to the success of Haimbili Haufiku Senior Secondary, which is one of the best-performing schools in the region.
