Nyambe’s back!

The Tafel Lager Brave Warriors will have England-based defender Ryan Nyambe for the away match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Senegal, but he will miss the return leg in South Africa due to Covid-19 protocols.

This was confirmed by Tafel Lager Brave Warriors coach Bobby Samaria as he announced his provisional squad of 28 players, with the local-based players set to report for camp yesterday.

Nyambe missed the September qualifiers which saw Namibia draw 1-1 against Congo and win 1-0 against Togo in Group H of the qualifiers, but coach Samaria has recalled him to the team.

“Ryan is eligible only for the away match in Senegal and will miss the second leg in Soweto due to the United Kingdom’s Covid-19 protocols that we need to observe. He is a key player for us and if we can use him any time, we will gladly take that chance. Senegal is a strong team and Ryan brings that experience to thwart their attacks,” he said.

Regular captain Petrus Shitembi is still missing in action as he continues to nurse an injury.

“I believe we have assembled the strongest team and we will prepare and make sure we get the work done. Senegal will be tricky but, again, we still believe and the players are determined to give their best and fight for a good result.

“It’s always about the margins and we have to get those right too,” Samaria said.

The fast-tracked qualifiers due to the pandemic will resume in October as the Brave Warriors visit group favourites Senegal on 7 October and host them in Soweto on 10 October.

Next on the agenda will be a visit to Congo and a host of Togo for the Namibians as the group action concludes from 13 to 16 November.

The top team from Group H will join nine other winners for the second round of the qualifiers who will be drawn into five home-and-away ties. The winners of each tie will advance to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This will be the 22nd edition of the World Cup and is scheduled to take place from 21 November to 18 December 2022.
