Namibia fighting for fitness ahead of game

Brave Warriors assistant coach Robert Nauseb, also known as the ‘Drill Master’, says despite only being in camp for two weeks, the side is showing promise when it comes to fitness.

He explained that some players are way ahead of others as they have been training during the Covid-19 lockdown and “just need their lungs to open up” as they haven’t had much game time.

With a 35-man training squad recently called up, the national senior side is getting ready for the Nelson Mandela Challenge friendly against Bafana Bafana on 8 October.

The players will be training twice a day at the Namibia Football Association Technical Centre until their departure to South Africa.

Polish up

The Warriors are also polishing their boots for the upcoming Council of Southern Africa Football Associations Cup tournament scheduled for November, with the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) championship competition slated for January next year.

Meanwhile, Namibia also has back-to-back Afcon qualifiers against Mali to contend with in November. The team is expected to compete in double-headers against the West African nation between 9 and 17 November, and then against Chad (away) and Guinea (home) between 22 and 30 March 2021 in the battle for spots at the tournament.

Looking in shape

It was a tough day at the office yesterday morning as players like Denzil Haoseb, Larry Horaeb, Emilio Martin, Dynamo Fredericks and Hendrik ‘Ballack’ Somaeb were seen pushing hard alongside Benjamin Nengavu, Absalom Iimbondi, Immanuel Heita and Marcel Papama.

Meanwhile, Ivan Kamberipa seems to have picked up an injury and sat the training out.

Namibia is in Group A of the biggest continental showpiece alongside Guinea, Mali and Chad. Guinea and Mali are hot favourites as they sit in first and second place with four points apiece. The Land of the Brave is in third with three points, followed by Chad at the bottom.
