Losing Khomasdal no option – Swapo

As party attempts to reclaims its lost urban support

Swapo regional coordinator for the Khomas Region Elliot Mbako says losing the Khomasdal Constituency in the by-election scheduled for 15 January is no option for the party.

He was speaking at a mini rally held in Khomasdal over the weekend.

Politicians are in the running for the coveted seat following the resignation of Margaret Mensah-Williams from that position.

Apart from Mensah-Williams, several other regional councillors from Swapo had to resign upon accepting nomination for a seat in the National Assembly, as is required to comply with Article 47 of the Namibian constitution.

Mbako called on those present to mobilise their fellow party members to canvass for votes in the run-up to the by-elections.

“The leadership of the party is called upon to fully join the mobilisation drive for the four said regional council by-elections. In this regard, the party should concentrate on house-to-house campaign strategies in order to meet all the constituencies and preach the Swapo party gospel.

“No effort should be spared in mobilisation to ensure the Swapo Party victory, especially in the areas that have proved to accommodate the independent candidate phenomenon.

“We have also seen that a greater number of people voted in the recent elections than ever before. This shows that our youth are taking political participation more seriously and it is indeed a welcome development,” he added.

According to Mbako, it is imperative to get all mobilisers on board for the elections.

“Let us also make sure that we call our colleagues, branch coordinators, branch mobilisers, call your colleagues in the north, in the south, in the east, wherever, to come and make sure we are all voting on the 15th. We cannot lose even one vote,” he said.

Mbako said Party candidate Angolo Samuel was instrumental in building party structures in Khomasdal, particularly in the informal areas such as 7de Laan and 8ste Laan which are extensions of the Khomasdal constituency.

“There were no structures here but if you go to 8ste Laan, 7de Laan, proper Khomasdal, Shandumbala, whatever, there are structures, there are branch leaders, and there are mobilisers so he's a hard-working cadre. So let us make sure that he takes over and that he takes Khomasdal to the next level,” he said.

Other by-elections will be held in the Keetmanshoop Urban, Gobabis and Walvis Bay Urban constituencies on the same day. No election will take place in Oshikuku since Swapo was the only party that nominated a candidate.
