Houses promised in informal settlements in Windhoek

The ministry of urban and rural development in collaboration with the City of Windhoek and National Housing Enterprise will deliver 200 affordable houses by November this year through its informal settlement upgrading project.

This was announced yesterday by minister Erastus Uutoni.

Uutoni during a media briefing said the project will target residents in informal settlement, initially only in Windhoek, who possess title deeds for the land on which they reside. It will also target those who do not have title deeds yet, but have deeds of sale for the land on which they reside and for which they have already started paying.

The project will run in different phases, with phase one targeting 200 houses to commence on 2 July.

“Another 400 houses will also be constructed under phase one at a cost of over N$64 million and is expected to be completed by 30 June 2021,” he said.


The project will cover areas such as Havana Proper, Onyika Number 02, Goreangab Extension 04, Greenwell Matongo D, Otjomuise Extension 08 and 09 as well as Freedom Land A and B, the minister said.

A house of 22 square metres will cost N$91 464 inclusive of land and labour, while a one-bedroom house of 32 square metres will cost NS103 752 inclusive of land and labour.

A two-bedroom house of 45 square metres will cost N$166 906 which will also include land and labour.

Uutoni said the project forms part of president Hage Geingob’s aim to get rid of shacks and eradicate informal settlements, which he declared a humanitarian crisis during the second National Land Conference that took place in October in 2018.

The project will later be expanded to other towns around the country. - Nampa
