A female police officer from the Ohangwena Region has been placed under self-quarantine after she travelled to Walvis Bay, which is a coronavirus hotspot.

Police are, however, investigating how the officer got to the coastal town while Erongo was still under lockdown.

Panic erupted in Ohangwena following rumours that the police officer sneaked into Walvis Bay a few weeks ago, where she came into contact with individuals who have since tested positive for the coronavirus. It also reported that the officer did not inform the authorities or quarantine herself as required.

In isolation

Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, confirmed that the officer travelled to Walvis Bay and is currently in isolation.

“We do not have all the details yet because it was only reported during a security cluster briefing this morning. We are not sure if the officer was in contact with people who tested positive, however, it's true that she travelled to the Erongo Region,” she said.

“We are also investigating how she got there while the region was still under lockdown.

“I cannot confirm whether she was on an official or private mission, and that is all part of the investigation.”

As of yesterday, Namibia recorded 63 positive cases, with Erongo recording 15 cases in the past two days.
