A total of 493 candidates have registered for next month's regional and local authority elections, with 93 of these being independent candidates, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) announced yesterday.

The majority of the candidates - 423 - are male, while 70 are female.

ECN chief electoral and referenda officer Theo Mujoro said they received sole nominations for four constituencies, namely Nkurenkuru, Tondoro and Mankumpi in the Kavango West Region and Uuvudhiya in Oshana.

He added that 18 political parties and 13 associations will contest for positions in the various local authorities.

Integrity checks underway

“The ECN is currently busy with integrity checks of all documentation received from respective political parties, independent candidates and associations. A proclamation will be gazetted [on] 6 November containing the full names of political parties and their candidates, independent candidates and associations that will be contesting,” he said.

Mujoro added the final voters roll will be gazetted and available on the same day, while special voting will be done on 23 November. The main voting day is scheduled for 25 November. “The ECN would like to applaud all political parties, independent candidates and associations for heeding the call to comply with the relevant legal provisions during the nomination process,” he added.
