Hage must summon Cabinet to avert strike - Naloba
The Namibia Local Business Association (Naloba) says President Hage Geingob should call the entire Cabinet from recess to help avert the looming strike by civil servants.
Naloba also pleaded with civil servants to prevent what it termed a “devastating economic impact”.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday in Ongwediva, Naloba vice-president Peter Amadhila said the looming strike is a “scary moment” which will have detrimental effects on the already limping economy.
Over 40 000 civil servants voted in favour of a strike during a two-day voting process last week, while 1 232 voted against it. They are demanding a 12% salary increase.
“The proposed strike during this hardest time of our economy will have devastating consequences which will take Namibia and its citizens a long time to recover.”
Bailouts needed
“Naloba wishes to advise the president to summon all mining and fishing giants in the country to bail out the country and its citizens. Naloba can facilitate this for convenience,” Amadhila said.
He added that schools, hospitals and many government institutions will be massively affected as well as government revenue and businesses.
“Civil servants should not opt to strike because the impact will be felt by all, including the members.
“Rather wait a bit for government to consider our advice and give response on the way forward,” Amadhila said.
