Parliament not permitted to talk about Mbumba’s farm – Katjavivi

Jemima Beukes
The Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi yesterday shut down Popular Democratic Movement’s Elma Dienda, who took the floor to ask questions about the alleged state-funded upgrades and renovations to vice-president Nangolo Mbumba’s farm.

Dienda had asked deputy prime minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to explain whether media reports on the renovations are true, but a visibly annoyed Katjavivi said the matter is not urgent.

“No, no, I am not permitting [this]. It is not urgent. No, no, I am sorry. It is not urgent,” he said.

“Thank you. Honourable member, you have had the floor,” he dismissed Dienda.

Mbumba's farm Amateta lies between Otjiwarongo and Otavi near the Waterberg Plateau National Park and the Mundulea Nature Reserve, and covers 5 330 hectares.

According to recent media reports, taxpayers will fork out about N$660 000 for phase two of renovations to the farm, and it is unclear what the construction will cost in total.

It is alleged that these renovations involve the relocation of structures and dwellings on Mbumba’s farm, which is expected to increase the cost of the project.

Other renovations also include the erection of a water tower and tanks as well as the installation of a pipe and plumbing network, power connections and electrical work, security fencing, gates and doors.
