Fire destroys nine shacks in DRC
NEWS IN SHORT
Nine shacks were destroyed after a fire broke out in the DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund on Friday.
The Erongo police regional commander for community affairs, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident.
According to Shapumba, a woman, her boyfriend and her youngest son were at home (shack) when her youngest son asked his stepfather to switch on the gas stove to boil water so that he could bathe before going to school.
"The stepfather allegedly turned the stove on and accidentally dropped a burning matchstick on it. This caused the stove to ignite. The shack subsequently caught fire. The girlfriend and her son managed to escape the flames while the stepfather sustained burn wounds on both arms and his face. He was rushed to Swakopmund State Hospital, treated, and then discharged. The fire spread and destroyed eight other shacks, leaving 14 people from different families homeless."
Fire fighters from the Swakopmund Fire Brigade responded and managed to contain the fire. The value of the damaged items is still unknown.
