DISGRUNTLED Omaheke Region residents can rest assured that Independence celebrations are to take place on Thursday 24 March in Aminuis, according to the Chief Control Officer of the Aminuis Constituency, Gustav Kauta. Displeased residents complained to the Daily Sun, prompting an investigation into the matter.

The celebrations which were to take place on 21 March were delayed mainly due to logistics, said Kauta, and explained that planning had been decentralised to the constituencies for the first time this year, and were no longer planned at head-office as usual.

The Governor of the Omaheke Region, Laura Mcleod-Katjirua, confirmed this saying that all constituencies should be given a chance to host the event instead of having it in Gobabis every year. “Technical arrangements had not been completed by Friday, causing further delays”, said the designated key-note speaker. According to Kauta, a meeting was held on Friday, 18 March, with several councillors about the postponed festivities. Furthermore, the public was informed that no activities where to take place on Monday he added.

The change of date was also released over the weekend through the media, said Kauta. Kauta added that another reason for the delays was the intention of involving local schools in the festivities and that not everyone could attend because people had travelled over the long weekend. Expected to attend will be councillors of all seven constituencies as well as participation from traditional leaders and performances from local artists, said Kauta. “It will be the same as it would have been on 21 March”, he added.

The festivities are scheduled to take place at the Dr. John Fisher Primary School in Onderaombapa. The region consists of seven constituencies: Aminuis, Epukiro, Kalahari, Gobabis, Otjinene, Otjombinde and Steinhausen
