THE Namibian nation should join hands to combat social vices that have polluted the society, such as crime, corruption and greed, said President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Sunday at Ongwediva. President Pohamba was speaking at the consecration ceremony of two new bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN).

“Incidents of crime and violence in our country are a source of great concern,” he said. The celebration of the 21st Anniversary of the attainment of the nation’s freedom and independence “ … invites us as a nation to pause and reflect on the moral state of our society”.

“As a result,” he says, “many of our people are no longer living according to the values of honesty, hard work and integrity. In fact, many, including the youth, appear to be more focused and pre-occupied with unbridled search for instant gratification and self-aggrandisement by any means.” Describing the Church as important partner in nation-building, President Pohamba invited it to join hands with Government in addressing the causes of youth delinquency that breed crime and other anti-social behavior. “I urge the Church to continue with outreach programmes aimed at providing spiritual and moral guidance to our young people,” he said.

President Pohamba expressed concern about alcohol and drug abuse and said the youth who involve themselves in such vices are gambling with their own future and the future of the nation. He said the Government will continue to protect human rights, promote social justice, good governance, transparency, accountability and integrity in the management of Government affairs. The President said Government counts on the Church to play its role in advancing the policy of national reconciliation. He wished bishops Shekutaamba Nambala and Josaphat Shanghala heavenly blessings and wisdom “as you lead the flock and spread the Gospel”.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nahas Angula, senior and junior politicians, representatives of local and international church bodies, traditional leaders and a huge crowd of believers.
