There were several exciting tennis league encounters at the CTC tennis park in Olympia and at the Sports Club Windhoek on Saturday.
In the men’s first division SKW beat the CTC top team by eight to seven match points and 70 to 62 game points.
In the men’s second division CTC A prevailed over club rival CTC B with 14 to 6 points and 53 to 35 game points.
In the women’s first division CTC A thrashed the Unam team while top-ranked SKW beat the CTC B Leopards.
In the women’s second division the DTS ladies defeated the inexperienced Nust student team.
The highlight of the weekend’s competition was the first-league encounter between SKW and CTC A.
CTC A’s Minichel Alemu continued his winning streak against Davis Cup player Deon van Dyk, beating him 7-6, 4-6, and 7-6 in a tight match.
SKW fought back with Kondonate Chirva beating Kallie Heese 6-1, 6-2.
The biggest upset of the match turned out to be the third single where CTC A’s SP van Wyk defeated Davis Cup player Katu Jacobs 6-3, 6-2.
“In my previous matches against Katu I had tried to keep up with his pace,” Van Wyk said.
“This time I slowed down my game and tried to take out the pace which really worked well today.”
The last singles went in favour of the hosting SKW team again.
Riaan De Witt defeated Ngobilizwe Moyo in a tight three-setter 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
The matches in the women’s divisions saw one-sided results.
In the women’s first division an inspired CTC A side overpowered the young Unam team taking all 20 possible points.
Top seeded SKW beat the CTC B team by a clear margin as well.
In the women’s second division DTS beat the Nust student team.
“The scores are somehow misleading. We had some long rallies and we enjoyed the matches”
DTS team captain Uschi Ahrens acknowledged.
“We also appreciated the hospitality of the young students after our matches”.
The league continues on 27 August with matches in the men’s second and the women’s second division.
