RDP slams N$11m for struggle kids
Social Security money belong to the people
The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) has accused the Swapo-led government and the Social Security Commission of poor governance and lack of accountability.
This followed President Hage Geingob’s transfer of N$11.3 million from the Social Security Commission (SSC) for the struggle kids.
In a statement issued last week RDP president Jeremiah Nambinga said the government and President Geingob must be reminded that all citizens are equal.
He also highlighted that the Namibian youth, irrespective of where they were born, are hard hit by hunger, unemployment, homelessness, destitution and poverty.
“The directive of the president to use these funds selectively for the benefit of the so-called struggle kids is tantamount to abuse of power and corruption. It is incomprehensible that N$11.3 million is being used to selectively benefit the selected few, while the majority of unemployed youth are wallowing in abject poverty,” he said.
He emphasised that the funds administered by the SSC belongs to the Namibian people.
“It must be emphasised that the funds are under the care and management of the SSC. As such, commissioners have the fiduciary duty for diligence and care of the funds. It stands to reason, in this case, that the commissioners as custodians of these funds must be found wanting and negligent,” said Nambinga.
He added that because of this, the RDP is doubtful whether the SSC commissioners are fit to be entrusted with that responsibility.
“The RDP wishes to register that the SSC has been a victim of unscrupulous looting by Avid and these funds have to date not been recovered. The RDP is concerned that looting of the SSC development funds will open looting the flood gates at other state-owned enterprises,” he said.
Nambinga also strongly appealed to the current administration to protect rather than squander public funds.
