Meatco readies for US market
While Meatco is readying itself to start exporting deboned beef to the lucrative United States (US) market the company says that its strategy for this market is to target the fast food industry and franchises like McDonald’s.
After Namibia finally obtained approval to export deboned beef to the US, Meatco has until 12 September this year to ensure that all systems are revisited at plant and at national level before exports begin. Namibia is the first country in Africa to obtain approval from the US to export beef to that country.
According to Meatco it was added to the Federal Register on 13 July this year for approval by the Food Safety and Inspection Services of the United States’ Department of Agriculture (FSISUSDA).
This process began almost six years ago, says Meatco.
Under the final approval agreements, Meatco will be exporting boneless raw beef products like primal cuts and beef trimmings as well as chuck and blade.
According to Meatco this also means that it can export both chilled and frozen boneless meat (excluding offal) to that country.
“The strategy for this particular market is to target the fast food industry and franchises like McDonald’s, to provide maximum returns for Meatco and its producers.”
According to Meatco, this is another niche market that has opened up, giving Meatco more options to maximise returns for producers. The additional market gives Meatco the opportunity to streamline its cuts and make sure it positions the right product, in the right market at the right time.
With this new logistical route, Meatco needs to ensure cost effectiveness and time management at all times.
Meatco says that logistics and freight must be as simple as possible, because it will be of no use if a specific market cannot deliver higher prices/returns for products.
In conclusion, the company says it has been maintaining and improving its quality, hygiene standards, systems and procedures throughout, in order to access world-class markets like this one.
