Kora millions: Lest we forget

Festus Nakatana
What we all know regarding this controversial issue up to now is that no local official has been arrested or held by the authorities to account for the missing millions of taxpayer money paid out to the Benin-born Ernest Adjovi, who wanted to host his highly questionable music awards in Windhoek in April this year.
The mastermind behind these awards is not new to controversy and what pains many of us is whether the authorities are capable to take on the mighty mafia behind breeding corruption.
The lessons from the Kora millions shenanigans is that our incredibly naïve government has seemingly created an environment where thievery is rewarded.
We may not like this reality, but this is the truth if one looks at how Adjovi easily got away with N$28 million in funds meant to promote the country’s tourism industry to the rest of the world.
This is what has shocked the nation. We are not talking about N$28 million meant to help Namibian athletes, nor are we talking about N$28 million to assist our poor countrymen and -women with basic needs. No! We are referring to N$28 million paid out to a foreigner and possibly his local cohorts to host a useless music awards that has long reached its sell-by date.
The word Kora already sends shivers down the spines of some of our officials in government, but what is disgracefully shocking many of us is that no one has taken responsibility for this mess.
This has led to the tongues wagging that whether the honest people lack the will to take a timely decision to stem this rot. The nation needs an answer now as to when will Adjovi and his cohorts will pay back our hard-earned money.
Government’s failure to deal with those involved in the payment of millions to Adjovi confirms long-established beliefs that the authorities are not walking the talk on corruption by ruthlessly punishing those found on the wrong side of the law.
