Congo teach Baby Warriors a lesson
Namibia’s under-17 national team, dubbed the Baby Warriors, were taught a lesson in the toughness of playing in West Africa on Sunday.
The team lost 3-0 to Congo Brazzaville in a Confederation of African Football (CAF) 2017 U-17 African Cup of Nations clash.
That result meant the Namibian team, which recently won the Cosafa under-17 tournament, was knocked out of the qualifiers by a 5-1 aggregate score. The Namibians came into the match trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Windhoek and on Sunday, Congo stepped up a gear at the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville as they led 2-0 at halftime.
According to coach Timo Tjongarero, the Baby Warriors gave away an early goal and later on conceded a penalty for a halftime score of 2-0.
“Overall, the boys showed some great character and we had chances too that we failed to convert in the first half.
“Second half was much stronger from us and we created three clear chances with two penalty appeals waved away,” Tjongarero said.
The coach believes the team is becoming better in their overall development.
“In terms of dealing with various physically imposing teams, the boys are getting there and with more high-level matches such as this one we have a great team for the future of our football,” Tjongarero said.
The team was expected back in Namibia yesterday.
