Classrooms in Oshana incomplete
Presenting his state of the region address at Oshakati on Friday, Kashuupulwa said 23 classroom blocks and nine teachers’ houses are yet to be completed.
“The company that received the contract in 2014 has upped and disappeared,” the Oshana governor said, without identifying the contractor.
The classrooms that are yet to be completed are Ehenye Primary School, Oshapwa, Eluwa Special School, Etambo Combined School, Dr Chief Ankama, Omagano, Onaushe and Ekwafo Secondary School. The incomplete teachers’ housing is at Omapopo, Omulunga, Oshipumbu and Oshekasheka.
“Upon enquiring, I was reliably informed that the construction of these classrooms and teachers’ houses was supervised from the head office in Windhoek,” the governor said.
Kashuupulwa at the same time expressed his gratitude over Grade 10 learners’ performance in his region, saying it has been exceptionally good for the past few years.
He said the Oshana Region’s Grade 10 examination results have for the past few years shown an upward trend, culminating in an overall second position at national level.
He however noted that the serious challenge in his region’s academic performance has always been with the Grade 12 examinations. Only 508 out of 2 602 Grade 12 learners qualified for tertiary education after writing final examinations last year.
“This means 2 094 learners did not make it. It is a big challenge that contributes to the already high unemployment rate that stands at 28% and poverty prevalence that stands at 21% in the Oshana Region, as per 2011 figures from the Namibia Statistics Agency,” said Kashuupulwa.
He therefore called upon the entire leadership of Oshana, parents, learners and stakeholders in education to work in the spirit of Harambee, the government’s plan to bring about prosperity for all Namibians, to support education by all means.
Kashuupulwa also officially launched the Harambee Prosperity Plan for the region during his state of the region address on Friday.
