Mrs Africa was launched in South Africa in 2006. Every titleholder since has brought her niche to the pageant, grooming it to become one of the most prestigious beauty pageants for married women on the African continent. With ten magnificent years behind the title, the founder of Mrs Africa, Carolyn Baldwin-Botha from Pageants SA, together with Rene Roberts-Patel and Janet Potgieter, have acted upon their vision to make this competition even more prestigious and easily accessible to all married women on the African continent. The aim of the Mrs Africa pageant is to create a platform by which the unique qualities of African women can be showcased and touch the world.
Out of the 40 contestants six are from to Namibia and they all have said they are ready to raise the bar high and bring the title home. The constants, Jeanette, Olivia, Albertha, Lizzelle, Roleen and Rachel are all between the ages of 25-55 years old, are permanent residents of Namibia and are married. “We are mothers, career women, wives, and a lot more. This is the first year that our country Namibia is part of the Mrs Africa campaign. We the ladies of Mrs Africa would like to reach out to our Namibian community to appeal to them for a little bit of help to reach our goals,” said Lizelle. The ladies said they came across the competition on social media and want to take it through to the end.
The contestants are tasked each to raise N$6 000 for two different projects namely the Dignity Dreams where they have to donate sanitary towels to the less fortunate woman from an organisation of their choice in Namibia, and the Nzuri Project that will assist woman in eastern DRC to get treated against the endemic Goiter and Fistula conditions. “We Namibian representatives choose to work together and have a combined fundraising event because it will be more effective that way. We are invited to take any kind of initiative to raise funds like approach individuals, tertiary institutions and companies to donate funding in order for us to host a successful event,” said Olivia.
The contestants have made this plea to the nation for assistance as they each have to raise a total of US$2 500 to cover the general cost of the finalist fees. There is also a ‘Golden Sponsorship’ opportunity in which big sponsors have the opportunity to receive certain exposure and other benefits in South Africa. Queries can be forwarded to Olivia via their social media pages or call 081 258 9041.
