October at the Movies: Horror, action and big-screen adventures

In theatres This October
From Tom Cruise’s Digger and the return of Street Fighter to creepy horror films and local favourite Al wat ek weet, here’s what’s hitting cinemas this October.

It is finally time to watch horror films, but for some reason, not many horror films are being released this month.

There are a few interesting films coming out, but if I am honest, I might skip a few of the films. I am looking forward to Tom Cruise’s new film, Digger, as well as Street Fighter. It looks like it could be a lot of fun. Here is what you can watch in theatres this month.

2 October

Verity

Based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, Verity follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, who is hired to complete the work of bestselling author Verity Crawford after an accident leaves Verity unable to write.

2 October

Digger

Tom Cruise’s latest film and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new film looks unique. Cruise plays an extremely powerful man who embarks on a desperate mission to prove that he can save humanity from a disaster that he himself caused.

9 October

Tony

Anthony Bourdain was a legendary chef, writer and television personality who was known worldwide, but before that he was uncertain about what he wanted in life. Tony takes audiences back to 1976, I watched it, and I love it.

Just Play Dead

Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green take on each other in this dark crime thriller. It sounds like fun, but also looks like a B-movie.

16 October

Street Fighter

The legendary video game series returns to the big screen and I am very excited. Street Fighter is set in 1993 and follows Ryu and Ken Masters when they are recruited by Chun-Li for the World Warrior tournament.

Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen’s classic story gets another big-screen adaptation. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles play sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who have to deal with love, family and financial uncertainty after being forced out of their family home.

Other Mommy

If you are looking for something creepy, Other Mommy brings serious horror to theatres. Eight-year-old Bela encounters an entity that emerges from her closet and looks disturbingly much like her own mother.

Whalefall

This could be one of October’s wildest survival stories and is one of the few films I am really looking forward to. A diver, Jay Gardiner, goes into the Pacific Ocean to search for his father’s remains. Things take a terrifying turn when Jay is swallowed whole by an enormous sperm whale.

23 October

Clayface

DC takes one of its strangest villains in a horror direction and this is not your ordinary superhero movie. Clayface follows Matt Hagen, a struggling actor whose Hollywood dreams are shattered when he is horribly disfigured.

Wildwood

Wildwood follows teenager Prue McKeel after her baby brother is kidnapped by a murder of crows and taken to the mysterious Impassable Wilderness.

30 October

Al wat ek weet

October closes with an Afrikaans film based on Marita van der Vyver’s popular young adult novel. It follows 17-year-old Gabriel Lombard after his mother’s death forces him to go live with his aunt and grandmother in Woodstock. Gabriel struggles to process his grief and escapes into his imagination, where he falls in love with Sasha.

Which films are you going to watch this October?
