King Gucci comes ‘Home’

Namibian artist, comedian, teacher and creative Herman Malukolo, popularly known as King Gucci, returns to music with a deeply personal single, Home, a song about belonging, growth and finding his way back.

Although many people have come to know King Gucci through his comedy and teaching, he says: "Music was already one of the ways I expressed myself."

His journey as an artist has not always been straightforward, with periods of progress, setbacks and moments of uncertainty.

“I’ve experienced moments where things were moving, moments where I had to step back, and moments where I questioned whether I should continue.

“Through all of that, I never really stopped being an artist. I think every experience I’ve gone through has shaped the person and musician I am today,” he added.

King Gucci stepped away from releasing music for some time as he focused on other areas of his life, particularly teaching, comedy and content creation.

He also used the period away to grow personally and creatively, saying artists sometimes need to step back before they understand what they want to say. “I took that time to grow, experience life and work on myself,” he said. “And honestly, I think the break gave me a different perspective.”

That feeling of returning is at the heart of Home, a song King Gucci describes as deeply personal. “In my case, coming back to music feels like coming home. I may have been away for a while, but music has always been somewhere inside me,” he said.

The title also represents comfort, belonging and love, while leaving room for listeners to attach their own meaning to the word. “Home represents comfort, belonging, love and that place or person that makes you feel like you can finally be yourself,” he said.

His experiences as a comedian and teacher have shaped his approach to music.

“Comedy has taught me how important storytelling is and how to connect with different kinds of people,” he said. “Teaching has also taught me patience, communication and how to understand people from different backgrounds.”

For listeners, King Gucci wants Home to be experienced rather than simply heard. “Ultimately, I want people to listen to it and feel something,” he said.

The release also signals a more permanent return to music, with more material already in the works. “I’m not coming back just to release Home and disappear again. There is more music coming, and I’m excited about what I’m working on,” he said.

“This time, I’m coming back with a different mindset, a different energy and a lot more to say.”
