Namibia receives mobile lab for rapid disease testing
Namibia has enhanced its capacity to detect and respond to disease outbreaks in remote areas of the country with the introduction of a Russian-donated mobile laboratory capable of delivering rapid test results.
Deputy health minister Suzan Ndjaleka said the equipment is set to transform how the country detects and contains infectious diseases.
“History teaches us that a nation’s true independence is not found solely in its borders or its flag, but in the safety and dignity of its people,” she said during the handover. “To be truly free, we must be health-secure.”
The deputy minister added that the new facility would allow health professionals to obtain “gold-standard results in hours, not days”, enabling immediate clinical decisions and faster containment measures.
The Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) mobile laboratory, equipped with advanced diagnostic technology from Russia’s Anti-Plague Research Institute Microbe, is designed to operate in remote and rugged environments. It enables rapid on-site testing for infectious diseases, drastically reducing the time required to detect and respond to potential outbreaks.
Days to hours
Ndjaleka said the mobile unit would address longstanding logistical challenges posed by Namibia’s vast geography. She explained that, in the past, samples from remote regions such as Kavango East Region had to be transported over long distances to central laboratories, delaying diagnosis and increasing the risk of wider transmission.
"By the time results returned, we were no longer just treating a patient; we were fighting an outbreak,” she said. “With this mobile laboratory, we are decentralising hope. We are taking the lab to the heart of the crisis.”
The donation also includes specialised training for Namibian health professionals, conducted by a Russian delegation led by Dmitrieva Ludmila Nicolaevna. Ndjaleka emphasised that this knowledge transfer is critical to ensuring the sustainability of the initiative. “You have not just given us equipment; you have empowered our people with the expertise to use it effectively,” she said.
Ndjaleka urged Namibian scientists and rapid response teams to treat the mobile laboratory as a critical operational tool rather than a symbolic asset. “These laboratories are not trophies to be kept in a garage; they are tools of war against disease,” she said. “Maintain this equipment as if the life of your own child depended on it, because one day, it very well might.”
Highlighting the global nature of infectious diseases, she called for continued international cooperation. “Viruses do not carry passports. They do not recognise borders. Our response must be as global as the threat itself,” she said.
