Poetry meets comedy

For the first time ever in Namibia, the National Theatre of Namibia(NTN), Spoken Word and Free your mind collaborated with show under the theme Speak the word and Free the mind, a fusion of poetry and comedy. The organisers of the show say they wanted to see what it would be like to fuse these two genres.

“The NTN has been sponsoring shows around Independence since last year to allow small art organisations such as ourselves to make use of their prestigious venue and it has been great. It's an immense but fulfilling challenge to be able to use their facilities and put a show out,” says Tanya Stroh, one of the organisers of the event.

She added that as artists they can learn a lot from each other so this was a great opportunity to get comedians to understand poetry and for poets to understand comedy.
“It was so much fun and a great learning experience and what came out was like ‘Wow, why didn't we do this earlier?’ ” she noted.

The audiences were “very disappointed” because of the duration of the show and wanted to know if there will be more shows like this. The organisers said they hope NTN invites them again next year and promised the next show will be bigger, longer and better!
