From back-up singer to Centre Stage
Avo Dumininga Emilio aka Fofa has been a backing vocalist for the past 12 years and now she feels it’s time she takes centre stage.
Born in 1980, Avo started singing in a Gospel group of students and other functions held at her school.
She says her love for music started when she was very young. She met Patricia in 2000 and they started singing together. “I was singing in the Kayec Cultural Group and when I met her.
Doors started opening for me and I started backing artists like Tequila, Ras Sheehama, Stella, Swart Baster and Atushe just to mention a few.”
A major advantage of backing different artists is the fact that she learned something from each one.
“For the first time ever I will be performing alone at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN). I am a bit nervous but I wanted this for a long time and I am working very hard to make a success of my performance.”
Inspired by local talents like Patricia and Erna Chimu she says, “If more female artists are as strong, humble and hardworking as they are, we will take the Namibian music industry to another level.”
Avo thanked the NTN and the sponsors for allowing aspiring artists like her the opportunity to showcase their talents at functions like the Namibian Women Summit.
She is currently looking for sponsors to record her first album, but said for now she is taking it step by step.
If you want to see Avo perform don’t miss the NTN Sistah Thang’s Feminine Fiesta on August 10 and 11 at the NTN Back Stage.
