Black Door takes a bite out of the “Big Apple”

Namibian musician Black Door has been based in New York for over a year and a half and has already made his Big Screen debut.

Most of you may remember him for his colourful suits and his unique dance moves, but Namibian Afro-Kwaito artist, Black Door, is quickly making a name for himself in the American entertainment industry.

The 31-year-old entertainer was born in exile as Moses Shilongo and is now based in the “Big Apple”, New York. Besides being a musician, he is also acting and modelling.

Black Door has already appeared as an extra in the hit television series Law and Order. He has also had a small part in a movie called Home, which was his Big Screen debut.

“We are now busy shooting a movie called Blood Ties, where I act as a train conductor, it’s an action movie and I am so excited and humbled at the same time,” said Black Door.

Blood Ties is an upcoming thriller about two brothers, who are on opposite sides of the law in Brooklyn during the 1970s. Black Door said it is a real honour to be working with veteran actors like Clive Owen and Mila Kunis, among others. The movie will be released next year.

Apart from acting, he is also doing modelling work which he said was all thanks to his looks. “I dont want to show off but in the States one has to have a specific. It is on the basis of this look that people will approach you on the streets or at restaurants and ask you who your agent is. They will say you have a modelling body or an acting face,” he said.

Black Door has also released an 11-track album called My Quest Undercover Boss. “Although you are doing well or you are a boss you have to be humble and undercover. There is no need to show off if you got it people will see it and recognise you,” he explain, adding that his personal favourites on the album is track five and eight - dedicated to his mother who passed away in 2010.

His advice to other Namibian musicians was that they not focus exclusively on music. “Most artists are making in the States because they are not just set on their music. They also do other things like acting, sound, modelling and other things they are good at,” he said.

He has been based in New York for the past year and seven months and added that he is proud of what he has achieved. “The sky is the limit,” he added.
