Pirates power past United Stars
Orlando Pirates continued with their recent good form after they beat United Stars 2-0, while Civics and SKW also recorded morale boosting wins as Blue Waters claimed bragging rights at the coast in Namibia Premier League (NPL) matches over the weekend.
Pirates are showing signs that they may be capable of challenging for top honours in the not too distant future, as a makeshift backline kept a clean sheet for the second game in a row.
The Buccaneers resurgence is especially significant when considering a number of players have been converted into defenders.
One such player was Brian Gurirab, who for the most part of his career has played in midfield and yet turned out a commanding performance in the heart of Pirates’ defense.
Equally impressive at right back was Engelhard Kahua, who made his name playing as a marauding winger.
However, Pirates’ real hero was Image Isaacs, who scored both goals for his team.
The win for Pirates, though, was not easy as a stubborn United Stars kept the first half scoreless.
Midway through the second half that all changed as the men from Rundu conceded a penalty, which Isaacs calmly slotted.
The midfield sensation settled the game barely fifteen minutes later as he fired home following a goal mouth melee.
The result gave Pirates 19 points as they remain in seventh spot while United Stars’ loss meant they remain at the base of the NPL.
Elsewhere, Civics beat Hotspurs 5-0 as the Mighty Civilians joined African Stars on 24 points.
Ramblers lost 2-1 at home to SKW while Blue Waters took the points in a 2-1 win over Eleven Arrows in Walvis Bay.
The game between Mighty Gunners and African Stars was postponed due to the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo being waterlogged.
